From prediction to reality: a history of the search for gravitational waves

  • Gravitational Waves Detected 100 Years After Einstein's Prediction

  • 1915 - Albert Einstein publishes general theory of relativity, explains gravity as the warping of spacetime by mass or energy
  • 1916 - Einstein predicts massive objects whirling in certain ways will cause spacetime ripples—gravitational waves
  • 1936 - Einstein has second thoughts and argues in a manuscript that the waves don't exist—until reviewer points out a mistake
  • 1962 - Russian physicists M. E. Gertsenshtein and V. I. Pustovoit publish paper sketch optical method for detecting gravitational
  • waves—to no notice
  • 1969 - Physicist Joseph Weber claims gravitational wave detection using massive aluminum cylinders—replication efforts fail
  • 1972 - Rainer Weiss of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge independently proposes optical method for detecting waves
  • 1974 - Astronomers discover pulsar orbiting a neutron star that appears to be slowing down due to gravitational radiation—work that later earns them a Nobel Prize
  • 1979 - National Science Foundation (NSF) funds California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and MIT to develop design for LIGO
  • 1990 - NSF agrees to fund $250 million LIGO experiment
  • 1992 - Sites in Washington and Louisiana selected for LIGO facilities; construction starts 2 years later
  • 1995 - Construction starts on GEO600 gravitational wave detector in Germany, which partners with LIGO and starts taking data in 2002
  • 1996 - Construction starts on VIRGO gravitational wave detector in Italy, which starts taking data in 2007
  • 2002–2010 - Runs of initial LIGO—no detection of gravitational waves
  • 2007 - LIGO and VIRGO teams agree to share data, forming a single global network of gravitational wave detectors
  • 2010–2015 - $205 million upgrade of LIGO detectors
  • 2015 - Advanced LIGO begins initial detection runs in September
  • 2016 - On 11 February, NSF and LIGO team announce successful detection of gravitational waves

Zika Kills Three As Carnival Revellers Warned

Zika is detected in urine and saliva - and pregnant women are being urged not to kiss strangers as carnival week begins in Brazil.
Zio outbreak

Three people have died in Colombia after contracting the Zika virus, which is spreading across South America and has emerged in Europe and the US.
It is believed to be the first time health officials have directly blamed the mosquito-borne disease for causing fatalities.
Brazil, where the virus is most prevalent, said Zika had been detected in urine and saliva, and officials there and in the US warned even kissing could potentially spread the disease.
Scientists pointed out there was no proof the virus could be transmitted through the fluids, but said people should take precautions, especially expectant mothers.

The victims in Colombia died of complications after being infected with Zika and then developing a rare neurological disorder called Guillain-Barre syndrome.
The condition sees the immune system attack the nervous system, causing weakness and sometimes paralysis or even death, but most Guillain-Barre patients recover.
Cases of the disorder have increased along with the spread of Zika, which is being blamed for causing brain defects in thousands of babies.
Many have been born with microcephaly, or abnormally small heads and brains, and the UN has urged increased access to abortion because of fears of severe birth defects.
Director of Colombia's national health institute Martha Lucia Ospina said: "Other cases (of deaths linked to Zika) are going to emerge.
"The world is realising that Zika can be deadly. The mortality rate is not very high, but it can be deadly."
The World Health Organisation has declared an international emergency and warned Zika could infect up to four million people in the Americas and spread worldwide.
This week, it was announced a pregnant woman in Spain who had travelled to Colombia has the virus - in what is thought to be the first such case in Europe.
Colombia is one of around 30 countries and territories which have been affected so far, with the hardest hit nation being Brazil.
Puerto Rico has become the latest country to declare a public health emergency.
The disease was previously thought to have been passed only by the Aedes mosquito, and not from human-to-human.
But this week came the news in Dallas that a patient had caught the virus after having sexual contact with someone who had returned from Venezuela, where Zika is circulating.
US health officials have issued guidelines to prevent the sexual transmission of the virus, telling men who have been to outbreak areas to use condoms during sex with pregnant women.

Leonardo DiCaprio receive an Oscar

Image result for Leonardo DiCaprio
Leonardo DiCaprio is undoubtedly one of the most talented actors Hollywood has ever produced. The 'Titanic' actor, however, is yet to receive one of the most coveted recognition for his outstanding contribution to the film industry - The Oscars. Despite being nominated several times, the actor has never won the trophy.

However, looks like Leonardo may finally get an Oscar....from his Serbian fans, that is.

A group of Russians in the north-eastern Yakutia region are gathering gold and silver that will be melted down and made into an Oscar statue for Leonardo because they feel bad that he hasn't won the award yet, reported TASS.

Tatyana Yegorova, the woman behind the 'Oscar for Leo' movement told TASS, "Yakutia praises high-quality cinema and considers DiCaprio to be an actor who can inspire and delight his audiences."

The Yakutia version of the Oscar statuette will vary slightly from the original. Instead of gripping a sword, the Yakutia Oscar figure's head will look towards the sky, because "when a person looks at the sky, the stars, only then does he realize his true purpose and become a part of nature," explained Yegovora.

The report further said that the figure will also hold a Choron, a traditional three-legged goblet, "symbolizing peace and expressing the people's love for the actor," explained Yegorova.

Yegovora has claimed that around 100 Leo fans have donated to the cause so far.The statuette will be cast in silver and stand around 12 inches tall, depending on the number of donations.

However, the group hasn't figured out how to present the statue to Leo. But Yegovora is confident that they will figure out a way, stated the report.

World's First Zika Virus Vaccine Made In India

World's First Zika Virus Vaccine Made In India, Claim Scientists

HYDERABAD:  In an important "Make in India" moment, scientists at a Hyderabad lab say they have developed the world's first vaccine against the Zika Virus . They say, in fact, that they have two.

The World Health Organisation has declared Zika and its suspected link to birth defects a
global health emergency. More than 20 countries in Latin America have reported an outbreak and a rare case of the Zika virus being transmitted through sex has been reported in Texas, USA.

As the world searches for a vaccine and other global companies take first steps on research, the Bharat Biotech International Limited in Hyderabad says it has patented the
Zika vaccine.
"On Zika, we are probably the first vaccine company in the world to file a vaccine candidate patent about nine months ago," said Dr. Krishna Ella, Chairman and Managing Director, Bharat Biotech Ltd.

Using a live Zika virus imported officially, the Hyderabad company has now developed two candidate vaccines, but taking them through animal and human trials could be a long haul. Dr Ella said he had sought the government's support on this and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)has stepped forward to help.

"We have just been informed about the Zika vaccine candidate that Bharat Biotech has. We will examine it from the scientific point of view and see the feasibility of taking it forward. It is a good example of a Make in India product," said Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, pediatrician and Director General, ICMR.

Dr Ella said in a best case scenario his company can make one million doses of the vaccine in four months. He has sought the direct intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that the vaccine's development and delivery is fast-tracked, cutting through the red tape of regulatory clearances, pointing out that the vaccine can help countries such as Brazil, a fellow member of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) group, and pave way for what he called "vaccine diplomacy."

"The Prime Minister should take up this project as it helps communities like Brazil and Colombia where we can do vaccine diplomacy. We are a part of the BRICS group and we have to help them. We would love to help. We want global public health to benefit," he said.

Experts have lauded Bharat Biotech's foresight  in working on a vaccine so far ahead on a neglected disease that has now taken global epidemic proportions.
